Spirit FM 88.7
Branding itself ‘Canada’s West Coast only Christian FM Radio’, the station is an initiative of Total Change Christian Ministries, which has owned and operated it since 2009.
In response to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s decision to make it mandatory for Canadian radio stations to broadcast emergency alert messages, Terry Somerville, Spirit FM’s General Manager began to investigate technologies that would allow the station to comply with the new regulations. The initial search proved disappointing, as the number of vendors offering emergency alert solutions were very limited, and the solutions available were going to be quite costly for a small station.
Terry then approached OpenBroadcaster to see if it could provide a better option. Using a combination of open source software and a customized, solid state fan-less computer, OpenBroadcaster was able to supply Spirit FM with a solution that met regulatory requirements while costing only one-third the price of what the competition was offering. Spirit FM’s early adoption of OpenBroadcaster’s emergency alerting solution was mutually beneficial, because it offered an opportunity to beta-test the product in an actual radio studio environment. Spirit FM is very happy with its choice, and has spread the word about OpenBroadcaster among the network of faith-based broadcasters of which it's a part.
