Trevor Baylis: Wind-up Radio Inventor Dies Aged 80
Trevor really inspired me to get into radio and provide services for the rest of the world. Would have really liked to meet him.
Where I saw the challenge and opportunity was when these villages in Africa all got around to having a wind up radio, (no one could come up with the combined cost of a battery) what content would they listen to and how would they get their programs and messages on the air? This is the historical building blocks and inspiration of OpenBroadcaster There is also a cautionary tale here. Trevor did some really interesting work for humanitarian causes, like the people of Africa. Investors came calling, they named a foundation after Trevor and eventually they booted him out of his own foundation, leaving him out on the street just like Nicola Tesla. Trevor is in good company. Inventor, Stuntman, Champion Swimmer.
